NEW TAZEWELL, Tenn. (AP) — A Clairborne County sheriff’s officer has been arrested on charges of extortion and bribery by a public servant.
The Knoxville News Sentinel (http://bit.ly/1CilOb3http://bit.ly/1CilOb3 ) reports that 49-year-old Robert G. Chadwell of Tazewell was arrested on Thursday by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
The TBI says in a statement that it was called upon earlier this week by 8th Judicial District Attorney General Jared Effler to investigate allegations that Chadwell was corrupt.
Authorities say they were investigating a claim that Chadwell had taken money in exchange for not pursuing drug and weapons charges against a suspect.
TBI agents say they watched Chadwell take $2,000 from the individual during an undercover operation on Thursday. Chadwell was arrested and fired from the force.
Jail records do not indicate if Chadwell has hired an attorney.
